The river cycle paths of East Tyrol are among the most beautiful of their kind, especially in autumn, when the landscape is colourful and the temperatures are pleasant. The Drau Cycle Path and the Isel Cycle Path are ideal for relaxed day trips, perfect for families, couples and leisure cyclists.
Drau Cycle Path, one of Europe's top river cycle paths
The Drau Cycle Path around Lienz is particularly family- friendly: wide, almost flat and traffic-free, it runs directly along the Drau. Meadows, small natural areas and the constant sound of water create a relaxed atmosphere.
The cycle path, which is around 510 kilometres long in total, has its origins in Dobbiaco in South Tyrol. Thanks to good rail connections, the desired starting point can be easily reached by train. From there, the route runs mostly gently downhill back to Lienz and is ideal for an uncomplicated cycling holiday in East Tyrol.
Isel Cycle Path
The Isel Cycle Path is one of the most impressive cycle tours in East Tyrol. Starting in Lienz, the route follows the Isel upstream towards Matrei and leads through a dynamic river landscape. In the area close to the town, the path is pleasantly wide and easy to ride on. Asphalt sections alternate with firm gravel, and the gradients remain even and moderate. The constant murmur of the glacier water creates a special atmosphere, while wide views of the East Tyrolean mountains open up again and again.
Autumn in East Tyrol offers ideal conditions for road cyclists: empty roads, good visibility, little wind and pleasant temperatures. The varied topography between gentle valleys and steep passes offers a variety of routes, both for ambitious athletes and for leisure cyclists with stamina.
Recommended road bike tours:
A special highlight in the road bike calendar is the annual Dolomites Tour, a cycling event in a class of its own.
The combination of challenge and nature makes road cycling in East Tyrol in autumn a special experience.
When the light softens and temperatures are pleasantly cool, the high season begins for true mountain bike enthusiasts. With over 600 kilometres of well-signposted trails, the region offers routes for every level of ability. From relaxed tours through picturesque valleys to action- packed downhill descents.
East Tyrol's diversity is particularly impressive in autumn: quiet paths, crystal- clear views and hardly any other cyclists on the trails. Refreshments and warmth are provided by mountain huts along the way.
